Is ChatGPT Making Us Less Smart? MIT Study Reveals AI’s Cognitive Impact
What New Research Says About AI’s Impact on Our Brains
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT has transformed how we work, learn, and interact with information. While incredibly convenient, a new study from MIT raises significant concerns about the potential cognitive impact of heavy AI use, introducing a concept called “cognitive debt”. Let’s dive into what the research suggests.
The MIT Study: Unpacking the Brain’s Response to AI
Researchers at the MIT Lab, led by Nataliya Kosmyna, conducted a study involving 54 participants aged 18-39 from various Boston-area universities. Participants were divided into three groups: one using ChatGPT, another using Google Search, and a control group using no tools. Their brain activity was monitored using EEG (electroencephalogram) data over four months.
